How to Send Swing Video to College Golf Coaches

When I was coaching collegiate golf, I used to get a lot of emails and swing videos.  Some videos were 1 swing, others were 15 minutes long!  Here are a couple quick tips on how to send swing video to college golf coaches.

I recommend the following:

  • Swing video should be 1 to 3 minutes in length
  • Wear golf clothes :)
  • A short intro is okay, but not necessary
  • Shoot with iphone, or high quality phone/camera
  • Post to YouTube and share link with coach
  • Don't try to make your swing perfect in these videos, just swing

What angles should video be shot from?

I recommend 2 swings from down the line (behind) and face on (side).

  • Driver
  • 5 iron
  • PW
  • bunker shots
  • chips
  • putts

So the total amount of shots shown should be 24.  That is plenty of footage.  If each shot takes 5 seconds, that is 2 minutes.  You'll have to do some editing so as to keep your video length less than 3 minutes total.

Put some work into this.  You get out what you put in.

If a coach is emailing you asking for current swing video, it is acceptable to send a couple swings from your practice session that day, and that is it.  But you should have a recruiting video no matter what level you are and where you will play in college.

Does it help to have a professional video made?

This used to matter 10 or 20 years ago.  You needed a professional camera and someone who knew what they were doing to operate it.  While this is still okay, it's not necessary.  With the increase in technology, an iphone can shoot video way better than cameras could 10 years ago, so having a friend or parent shoot the videos is just fine!
